Health & Fitness Tip #9 - Spring 2006
Spring has finally arrived (this must have been the worst March & April California has ever seen!) and people everywhere are gearing up for their favorite outdoor activities such as Golf, Tennis, Softball, biking and running etc.
Before you start thinking about long drives, overhead volleys, homeruns, the “Tour de France” or a half marathon your focus should be on injury prevention. Unfortunately injuries to shoulders, knees, ankles and backs are too often putting an early end to what was supposed to be an active and fun filled spring and summer!
Preparing yourself for your favorite outdoor sport is as important for you as the preseason drills for the athletic superstar. We recommend you start your Spring and Summer fitness program with a tune up for the musculoskeletal system by adding strength and flexibility exercises to your Preseason work-outs. Depending on your chosen activity you should concentrate on preparing those muscles, tendons and bone structures that absorb the most physical stress. Literature on sport specific conditioning is available at every bookstore, library and online. If you need more help in getting ready consider hiring a Personal Fitness Trainer and let her/him design a customized exercise routine that minimizes the risk for injury and ensures a maximum of fun and success all Spring and Summer long!
Enjoy the weather, stay active and be safe!
A Santé,
Hartmut
